Research suggests psilocybin-assisted therapy may be an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Currently, the treatments offered for PTSD range from talk therapy to antipsychotics, antidepressants, and anxiolytics. However, these approaches sometimes fall short, especially long term1.
Some animal studies show that psilocybin may be an effective therapy for treating PTSD. A 2013 animal study from the University of South Florida shows that psilocybin can help study subjects overcome fear conditioning far better than mice that were given a placebo. The study supported the hypothesis that psilocybin can help break the traumatic cycle that occurs in patients with PTSD2.
