Microdosing Psilocybin Edibles: A User’s Experience

The practice of microdosing psilocybin mushrooms has evolved from underground experimentation to its current status as a widely used practice among psychonauts. An increasingly large variety of products are made and marketed specifically for sub-perceptual dosing, which is a microdose that does not produce an active feeling of being altered. These products range from hand-made psilocybin edibles to measured capsules. This new generation of mushroom products is designed to make the experience easily accessible and, perhaps, more consistent.

This review will describe several microdosing options, which were available when this review was written in the spring of 2025. I’ll examine their potency, quality, onset time (where it was apparent), and overall experience. While psilocybin products remain federally illegal in the U.S., this review attempts to provide helpful information for people in areas where these products are available.

I wanted to see if there were beneficial aspects to microdosing psilocybin that might improve my own condition. I have Parkinson’s disease, I’m in my seventies, and I wondered if microdosing could improve my sleep, perhaps enhance my dreams, and increase my resilience, cognitive flexibility and memory. This is a very broad range of inquiry, especially considering that this subjective evaluation had an n of 1. Just Me. But it might be useful to you.

Since more than 150 species of mushrooms contain psilocybin, and dozens of factors can affect the potency of the mushroom, my observations and conclusions might not be yours. Mushrooms that are sold as “magic mushrooms” typically have a dosage that depends on both the psilocybin and psilocin content, which can vary widely between and within the same species. Psilocybin content is typically around 0.5% to 1% of the dried weight of the mushroom, with a range of 0.03% to 1.78%. Psilocin present in these mushrooms is within a range of 0% to 0.59%. Psilocybe cubensis, the most popular species, is reported to contain 0.63% psilocybin and 0.6% psilocin, or about 1.2% of psilocybin and psilocin combined.

The concentration of psilocybin depends on several factors such as the time of collection, method of preservation, and the conditions in which the mushrooms have been grown and used to produce an edible product. Sometimes, the potency of mushrooms within the same flush, or batch, in a growing container can vary.

What’s A Microdose?

Before examining specific products, it’s worth defining what a microdose is and what it’s supposed to do. There are several schools of thought about microdosing. Some people believe that a microdose is a small dose that produces a mild altered state of consciousness. Others believe that microdoses should be small enough to remain sub-perceptual, meaning they shouldn’t produce noticeable psychedelic effects but rather subtle shifts in mood, creativity, focus, or energy. I subscribe to this second approach because I’m interested in sub-perceptual experiences.

A microdose is usually considered to be 1/5 to 1/20 of the potency of a recreational psychoactive dose and is usually around 0.1 to 0.3 grams of dried mushroom, according to Harvard Health Online. This was the most difficult aspect for me to adjust to, as I kept expecting a less powerful version of that unique psychedelic mushroom experience I had known for decades as a psychonaut accustomed to taking larger doses.

The ideal microdose varies considerably between individuals based on body weight, sensitivity, and the particular strain of mushroom being used. Most experienced microdosers recommend people start at the lowest possible dose and gradually adjust upward until they hit a personal “sweet spot.”

Let’s examine six different examples of products based on the packaging, the delivery method of the purported psilocybin mushrooms, and the various forms they take to make dosing convenient and consistent. Several examples used chocolate as a carrier. The chocolate is usually molded so it can be broken into pieces of a specific size, making it easier to break off and consume either a microdose or a larger dose.

Let’s look at three different products.

Psilocybin Edibles With Pretty Packaging but Little Effect

The first product I tried was a mushroom-infused chocolate bar, scored for breaking into a range of doses, and delivered in a die-cut printed package. No name was on the package, and there was no indication of the mushroom species it contained or the product strength.

Packaging: The bar was distributed in a child-proof metallic sleeve contained in a remarkable die-cut cardboard box. This made for an extraordinary package, one of the most clever and unique I’ve ever seen. I could only hope that the psychoactive component was as well prepared as the packaging, but in my opinion, it was not.

That was my first lesson – excellent packaging doesn’t mean a great mushroom experience. Even a sub-perceptual one.

Dosage: Unknown; the package had no information about the source of the product or the potency and recommended dosage. I broke off one square of the bar.

My experience: The chocolate bar appeared uniformly processed, visually attractive, and it had a very good taste. The onset, such as it was, felt extremely subtle. I sensed a slight shift in consciousness after approximately 30 – 45 minutes with nearly non-existent cognitive changes lasting roughly 2-3 hours. Since this was my first experience with microdosing, I tried to pay careful attention to every bit of the experience.

I was struck by the near total lack of physical or mental effects. I felt I could operate heavy machinery with no problem, though I didn’t try that. I had to first understand and appreciate the concept of sub-perceptual dosing, adjusting my expectations accordingly. For my extended trial, I took a single square of the chocolate, broken along the scoring lines, once a day for three days, with four days off. I read what others suggested, and this appears to be a common protocol. I could detect no effects from this dosage, nor any long-term changes, positive or negative.

I also tried taking the dose before going to sleep and had no noticeable changes to sleep or dreams. In brief, I couldn’t find any benefits to this product. On days when I wasn’t dosing, I could detect no changes in my mood or creativity. I was unimpressed by this experience, and it made me question the whole idea of microdosing as I didn’t see any obvious upside to consuming this product.

Best for: Those seeking a minimum repeatable dosage and a good taste experience. There were no body sensations and no apparent visual effects, no impairment or improvement of physical or mental activities. In short, this product was as close to no effect as possible.

Mushroom Chocolate Enhanced Dreaming

The second product was also in the form of a chocolate bar, scored for breaking along several different angles to produce different dose levels. This product was labeled “Odyssey” and included much more comprehensive data on the label than the first product I tried. The net weight of the bar was one ounce, and it was packaged in a child-proof foil sleeve.

Dosage: Following the instructions on the package, one small triangular piece yielded a microdose but did not say what this dosage was. According to the information on the package, this amount should be “mood and energy boosting.” The manufacturer added some relevant information: “If you are doing a proper microdose, you should feel nothing out of the ordinary.” I set my expectations accordingly, but I was concerned that it did not note the dose.

My Experience: I didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary, but I did feel something subtle and rather enjoyable. After my experience with the first product, which really didn’t do anything for me, this one came as a pleasant surprise. For this second experience of three days of continuous dosing, I decided to take the microdose before going to sleep. This proved to be a wonderful way to experience mushrooms. My dreams were more colorful, and my sleep was sound. In addition to having vivid dreams, I had memories of people from long ago in my life that I had not thought of for a long time. I was left with a generally good feeling.

Best for: Those interested in exploring dose-specific effects and developing a more nuanced understanding of the psilocybin experience.

Mushroom Capsules Offer Consistency

The third product I tried was powdered mushroom in pharma-style digestible capsules. They appeared to be packaged for consumer use. The brand identification called it Mind Altar.

Dosage: Unknown. The words “microdose” and “chamomile” were on the package, but that was all. I assume the latter was the flavor of the product, though I couldn’t understand how an encapsulated mushroom could have a taste! The plastic packaging bore no instructions or dosing information, except to suggest that they were appropriate for microdosing. I took one capsule per day, four consecutive days of microdosing followed by three days off.

Delivery: Powdered dried mushroom, apparently with a flavoring additive to give it a chamomile taste, which I could not detect. The use of capsules was very convenient and made for a consistent experience.

Experience: This offers the most flexible dosing of all products reviewed, allowing users to precisely calibrate their preferred amount when they know the dosage. It’s also riskier to take capsules without dosage information because they could contain something aside from powdered psilocybin mushrooms, but the same could be said about the chocolate bar products I sampled. All of the products I ingested were obtained through a source that tests to ensure that no harmful adulterants are present.

The capsule form seemed to make for a somewhat faster onset (20-30 minutes) and anecdotally, seems to produce effects with stronger mood enhancement properties compared to the other products I sampled with other delivery methods. However, this may be due to this product simply containing a larger dose of psilocybin than the others I sampled.

Since there was no labeling showing strength, this was impossible to determine. I found the capsule form very convenient for ingesting before going to bed, much better than eating a piece of chocolate! As with the previous product, I noticed that my dreams were more vivid and detailed. I was clearly remembering people and events from 60 years ago or earlier, but after stopping the microdosing, these types of dreams no longer happened.

Best for: Those seeking a convenient way of dosing, with faster onset and deep sleep and (in my case) more colorful dreams.

Final Thoughts on Psilocybin Edibles

I cannot say for certain whether these microdosing experiences had any impact on my Parkinson’s because the impact of this condition changes randomly from one day to the next. What I can say, however, is that it was a very pleasurable experience overall, and I found no negatives. It didn’t stop me from doing things or impair me in any way. I can’t say for certain that it was changing cognition, but my mood improved and my dreams were certainly more vivid. This was the most noticeable result and was rather charming.

Stay tuned for my next round of reviews where I will sample three more psilocybin products.
